Task: Create a booklet about an iconic graphic designer. The book must capture the designer’s spirit and style.
Project Type: Book Making
Medium(s): Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign
I was assigned to create a short booklet about the graphic designer Deborah Sussman. Her most notable work is associated to the environmental graphics for the 1984 Olympic Games held in Los Angeles, California. The booklet is 21 pages long and is about her early life, her most iconic work, and her legacy. The inspiration for the shape of the booklet was based off the sonotubes she designed for the games. I wanted the color palette to reflect her love for overwhelming colors, but still somehow feel controlled.
What I learned from this project was the importance of appreciating the history or graphic design. To quote Nigel from “The Devil Wears Prada,” “what they did was greater than art. Because you live your life in it.” Deborah Sussman created something so iconic that it became acceptable without second thoughts. I think being aware of what was made in the past allows us young graphic designers to strive to shape the future. While referencing the past for inspiration is a common it’s important to keep pushing forward and innovating. Graphic designers live in the world she and the big names created for the 21st century. Now, it’s our turn to create the world for the next generation of creatives.
HIS-tory is written by men for men. This project allows me to explore the innovation women graphic designers have brought to the industry.
